Off the Record with Janam Mehta

The FLAME Business and Consulting Club kickstarted the academic year with a power-packed session that set the tone for everything that followed. On 26th September 2025, the campus witnessed the return of one of its own, Mr. Janam Mehta, FLAME alumnus, venture capitalist, and entrepreneur, for an electrifying session on business, startups, and venture capital.

From the moment Janam took the stage, the energy in the room shifted. He didn’t just talk about investing, he redefined it. Challenging the safe, linear logic of “picking winners,” he introduced the audience to the ruthless yet fascinating world of venture capital, where success isn’t built on averages, but on outliers.

Through gripping real-world examples, from CureSkin vs. Traya to Purplle, Ola, and OpenAI, Janam unpacked the Power Law, the mathematical truth that governs venture capital: Out of 10 bets, 6 crash and burn, 3 return modestly, and 1, just one, returns 20x and changes everything.

That one breakout defines the entire game.

But this wasn’t just a talk about finance, it was a masterclass in perspective. Janam urged the audience to reflect on their own risk-taking mindset. If investors can stomach 90% of failures to find one winner, why are we so afraid to take our own bold bets? He challenged every listener to rethink their “portfolio of decisions”, to stop chasing certainty and instead pursue conviction.

The session left students questioning their definitions of success and safety. It was more than a lecture, it was an awakening. The first event of the year didn’t just inform; it inspired. It reminded everyone that life, much like venture capital, rewards those who dare to bet big.
